1. How does a student get in chorus?

  • Pass a spring audition with Mr. Dove (You can sing anything you want with no accompaniment needed.)
  • Sign up for Concert Chorus with a guidance counselor by the time they require

2. How many times can students take chorus?

  • As many semesters as they want, as many years as they want

3. What are the requirements once a student is in chorus?

  • Girls must get sized and purchase concert outfits shortly after their class begins.
  • Boys must purchase/rent a tuxedo in time for the concert.
  • (See Parent/Volunteer link for concert outfit/tuxedo if needed.)
  • Sing in the winter concert in December (if taking chorus first semester)
  • Sing in the spring concert in May (if taking chorus second semester)
  • Sing in the fine arts festival if it is during your semester

4. What’s so great about being in chorus?

  • Having Mr. Dove as a teacher/choral director
  • Meeting and hanging out with great friends while singing
  • Alumni return to join in “The Hallelujah Chorus” at the end of the winter concert.
  • The spring concert also includes a senior slide show and senior ensembles.
  • Going on the spring break trip with the chorus every year.

5. Does a student have to take the chorus class to be in the Broadway shows?

  • No, they are completely separate.

6. How do students go about being in a Broadway show?

  • Mr. Dove will post audition times on his door near the beginning of the school year and around Thanksgiving, and you must sign up to sing any song you want without accompaniment.
  • If you want a major role, you must audition with one of the songs in the show (Mr. Dove will give you a CD with the songs if you ask him and if you provide the CD to him). For a major role, you probably will have to return for callbacks, where more than one student tries out for a part.
  • The fall show is in November, and the spring show is in March.

7. What are the requirements once a student is selected to be in a Broadway show?

  • Music rehearsals are every Tuesday and Thursday after school.
  • Most students with speaking roles also practice Mondays and Wednesdays after school.
  • Choreography rehearsals are most Fridays from 4:00 – 11:00 pm (except during home football games). Students must pay $3 cash for a parent volunteer to deliver their meal around 7:00.
  • Students must pay an approximately $100 costume rental fee for most plays. (See fundraising link if needed.)
  •  All cast members must donate TWO 12-pack COKE products per play they are in. (Coke, Mello Yello, Sprite, Dasani H20, Hi-C must be taken to 9th grade office.)
  • Most students contribute money for a gift to be presented to Mr. Dove at the final show for all the extra hours he puts into the Broadway shows.
  • Parents should volunteer for something (see Parent/Volunteer link for more information).

8. Do students have to be in the chorus class to go on the Spring Break trip?

  • Yes, because the class is where they learn the songs.
  • Remember that students must pay for the trip (see Parent/Volunteer link if needed).

9. Can students go on the Spring Break trip if they take chorus only in the fall?

  • Fall chorus students will need to give Mr. Dove a CD during the spring semester so he can record the spring break songs for them to learn.

10. Can students who take chorus in the spring participate in the fall cheesecake fundraiser?

  • Yes, but it takes more responsibility. Students will need to ask Mr. Dove at the beginning of the school year for cheesecake forms and turn them back in on time.
